Trust Yourself: My Double Wedding Ring Quilt Journey

From “too fiddly for me”, to a quilt I’m proud to gift — stitched with digital and ruler quilting on Lady Mollington.

When I first heard about the Double Wedding Ring quilt pattern, I told myself it wasn’t for me. Too fiddly, too technical, too… much! But patchwork has a funny way of nudging us forward. And here I am, proudly showing you my finished quilt — a project I once said I’d never attempt. Knowing of two weddings in the next year, definitely spurred me on too.

Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone

The phrase that sums this quilt up is simple: trust yourself. I had doubts, plenty of them. But once I pushed through, each curve, each ring, and each careful seam became a little triumph. By the end, I didn’t just have a quilt — I had proof that sometimes we’re far more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Quilting with Lady Mollington

Of course, making the quilt top was only half the story. Quilting it gave me just as much pride. This was where my longarm quilting machine, ( a Handiquilter Moxie XL) affectionately named Lady Mollington, came into her own.

Some of the quilting was digital quilting, a precise dance of patterns stitched just as I wanted in sections around the rings. Please don't be thinking that all that takes is a one click wonder, as that's pretty far from reality. I also added my own touch with ruler quilting, hand-steering Lady Mollington across those arcs and shapes. That balance between modern longarm precision (still needing much input from me) and hands-on craftsmanship made the quilt feel truly mine.

A Quilt to Be Proud Of

This Double Wedding Ring quilt has been gifted now, which makes me even happier. It’s left my studio, but the lessons it's reinforced for me stay close: patience, focus, and the courage to trust myself when the project feels too big.

And here’s the thing — if I can master something I once swore off, you can too. Whether it’s this technique or another patchwork challenge you’ve been avoiding, maybe it’s time to trust yourself and give it a go. I'm not here showing this for you to admire my quilt. It’s about YOU finding the spark to make your own.

One happy bunny 🐇,

Diane

Before you go - I have to show you the back of this quilted table runner - the back so often shows off the quilting so much more. All of this quilting could be done on a domestic machine too, so go on, have faith - push yourself to something you think is currently beyond you. If not this, I wonder what you'll do.
